Odontogram — A Guide to the Digital Dental Chart

An odontogram is a digital dental chart that visually displays the condition of all of a patient's teeth. The treatment history, current problems, and planned treatments for each tooth are visible at a glance. This speeds up the dentist's decision-making process and improves the quality of care.

GateDent's odontogram module provides an interactive tooth diagram. The dentist can click on each tooth to record its current condition — caries, fillings, crowns, extracted teeth, implants, and other conditions are shown using color codes. The treatment plan is also visualized on the same diagram, making it easy to explain to the patient.

The main advantage of a digital odontogram over its paper version is history tracking. Every change is recorded with the date and the dentist's name. This makes it possible to trace the patient's entire treatment history, from their first visit to the present day. This is especially useful for long-term treatment plans and when the treating dentist changes.

The odontogram is also used in treatment planning. The dentist marks the planned treatments on the diagram, sets their order of priority, and calculates the estimated costs. The patient sees the treatment plan visually, which increases transparency and makes it easier to obtain patient consent.
