Types of Dental Fillings and Selection Criteria
Dental fillings are the most widely used dental treatment for restoring tooth tissue damaged by caries. A variety of filling materials are available, and each has its own advantages.
Composite (white) fillings are the most commonly used type today. They can be matched to the tooth's shade and provide an aesthetic appearance. They are suitable for both anterior and posterior teeth. They are light-cured and completed in a single session.
Amalgam (silver) fillings are highly durable and resistant, and are widely used particularly in posterior teeth. They cost less than composite but offer no aesthetic advantage. In some countries their use is declining due to their mercury content.
Ceramic and glass ionomer fillings are used in specific cases. Ceramic fillings deliver a high aesthetic result, while glass ionomer releases fluoride to give the tooth additional protection — it is particularly recommended for children's teeth. In the GateDent odontogram module, the exact tooth surface on which each filling is placed is precisely recorded.
