About Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Root canal treatment (endodontics) is the process of cleaning the inflamed or infected nerve tissue (pulp) inside a tooth and filling the canals. This treatment makes it possible to preserve the tooth instead of extracting it. Root canal treatment is required when the pulp is damaged as a result of deep caries, trauma, or a crack.

Root canal treatment consists of several stages: first, an X-ray is taken and the number of canals is determined. The tooth is then numbed with local anesthesia, access to the pulp chamber is opened, and the inflamed tissue is removed. The canals are widened with special instruments and disinfected.

The cleaned canals are filled with a special material called gutta-percha. Sometimes the treatment is completed in a single session, and sometimes it requires 2-3 sessions — this depends on the severity of the infection. After treatment, the tooth is usually covered with a crown to ensure its strength.
